Parish of Blessed Sacrament & St Peter, Leicester
Statement on Domestic Abuse
Our Catholic Faith teaches us that violence and abuse in the home are unworthy of marriage and family life, and are therefore unacceptable.
We believe that everyone has the right to a life free from abuse in any form. Domestic abuse is wholly unacceptable and inexcusable behaviour and responsibility for domestic abuse lies with the perpetrator. Within the parish we endeavour to provide a safe and supportive environment for all our parishioners and visitors.
The parish will respond to any domestic abuse situations by:
-
Valuing, listening to and respecting victims and survivors.
-
Ensuring that informed and appropriate pastoral care is offered to any child, young person or adult who has suffered abuse;
-
Ensuring that contact details for specialist agencies and support services are available to anyone who visits our churches by providing posters in public and women-only areas of relevance to survivors, children and alleged or known perpetrators of domestic abuse.
-
When concerns are raised we will
-
Signpost those who have experienced abuse to find informed support with local agencies ;
-
Cooperate with the appropriate statutory bodies during an investigation into domestic abuse if necessary, including when allegations are made against a member of the church community.
-
-
Encourage concerns to be raised and responded to appropriately and consistently when necessary
-
We recognise that perpetrators of domestic violence may wish to seek help voluntarily and may require pastoral support and guidance. This will be provided in such a way as to ensure the safety and dignity of the victim.
